More than 6,000 individuals of the endemic fish Ratsirakia sp. and Rheocles sp. have been salvaged in the clearing areas of Ambatovy‚Äôs Mine Site in Moramanga as part of the company’s endemic fish management program. As an integral part of the existing biodiversity richness of the Ambatovy forest complex, these fish species that are new to science have been transferred to the rivers that are not impacted by the Mine and to the ‚Äúnatural basins‚ÄĚ located in the conservation areas surrounding Ambatovy‚Äôs Mine Site. The ecological monitoring carried out following their transfer has enabled an inventory of young individuals, thus substantiating the fact that these fish species are well adapted to their new habitats. Ambatovy is currently conducting the genetic studies, the morphological descriptions, and determining the range of these fish species so that the species can receive their scientific names and their IUCN status.
